NATIONAL CENTRE FOR LABORATORY ANIMAL SCIENCES (NCLAS)

Introduction

Use of good quality (genetically and microbiologically defined) animals is essential for obtaining reliable and reproducible experimental results in biomedical research and for the production and testing of drugs and vaccines. Most biomedical institutions, university departments, veterinary and agricultural institutions, vaccine producing units and pharmaceutical concerns do not have any reliable source of good quality laboratory animals for their research and testing activities. Setting up of animal facilities for production of good quality animals is costly, time consuming and requires professionally qualified staff.

To meet the growing demand for high quality laboratory animals and to augment the training and research facilities in the country, a new National Infrastructural Facility for Laboratory Animals (NIFLA) was established under the Laboratory Animals Information Service Centre (LAISC) during the 7th Five Year Plan with financial support from the ICMR and the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The LAIS Centre has been renamed as National Centre for Laboratory Animal Sciences

Different species and strains of microbiologically and genetically defined animals are bred in this facility by adopting the most advanced scientific techniques. A team of well qualified biotechnologists, veterinarians and technical assistants, who are trained in modern methods of animal care, breeding and husbandry, manage this national facility. It has well-equipped and well-staffed microbiology and pathology laboratories for monitoring the health status of animals bred and maintained. Preparation and quality control of animal feed is monitored by a Nutrition - Biochemistry laboratory. Diets for different species of animals are formulated and pelleted in the facility and autoclaved before being fed to the animals. The microbiological and nutritional quality of diet is constantly monitored.

The foundation stocks of different strains of rats and mice are bred in positive pressure isolators in microbiologically defined status. These animals are devoid of all parasites and pathogenic microbial organisms. The expansion breeding of these species as well as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters is done in barrier-maintained rooms. These animals are also free of all parasites and pathogenic organisms. Utmost care is taken to ensure the quality of animals produced in this facility.

The animals procured from this national facility (where they are maintained in ideal conditions) have to be maintained in similar conditions in the user institute. This is very essential to get reliable and reproducible experimental results.

Some of the basic requirements are given below :

  1. Environmental Conditions

Temperature 25°C ± 2°C throughout the year
Relative humidity 45-55% throughout the year
Ventilation (number of air changes)   16-20 fresh air changes/hour  (Recirculation of air from animal rooms is not recommended).
Light-dark cycle 12 hours light and 12 hours dark or 14 hours light and 10 hours dark.
Light intensity 350-400 lux one metre above the floor level
Light source Fluorescent tube lights fixed in such a way to facilitate uniform distribution of light
Noise level   Should be less than 65 decibles (should avoid all high frequency sound)

  1. Hygiene and Care

A high degree of hygienic conditions should be maintained. Periodical cleaning and sterilization of cages, diet and water containers and cleaning and disinfection of rooms should be ensured. Animal rooms should be rodent and other vector proof. Pest control measures should be undertaken periodically. Use of any pesticide which may have deleterious effect on animals should be avoided. "Pyrethrin", a plant extract can be safely used as a pesticide in animal rooms. Trained personnel should undertake the day-to-day care of the animals.

  1. Nutritional Requirements

The animal should be provided with clean feed and water free of pathogenic organisms. The feed should meet the nutritional requirements of the animals. Water should be free of all pathogenic organisms. Boiled, cooled water can be used. Acidifications of water with conc. HCL to adjust the pH to 2.8 to 3.2 is good (Add 1 ml of concentrated HCL to 1 litre of boiled and cooled  water).

  1. Ethical Considerations and Experimental Protocols

Absolute care should be taken to avoid inflicting unnecessary and avoidable pain to the animals. Experimental procedures on the animals should be carried out only under the supervision/guidance of appropriately qualified persons. An Ethical Committee consisting of experts should approve Experiments involving live animals. While planning any experiment it is recommended that you may consult a statistician for determining the minimum sample size.

The pricing of the animals is done on the basis of various inputs. It will work out cheaper (and quality assured) to buy animals from our facility rather than attempting to breed the animals in the user's premises. The facility has the capacity and potential to breed and supply large number of different species and strains of laboratory animals as per customer's requirement.

Details of the species and strains of animals available for supply and present price and terms and conditions of supply, and ordering procedures are furnished for the convenience of prospective buyers.

How to Order the Animals

  1. While ordering please specify the following:

  1. Your CPCSEA registration Number

  2. Your Institutional Animal Ethics Committee's approval for the animals required

  3. Species

  4. Strain

  5. Age and /or weight range

  6. No. of animals required

  7. Sex (orders for both male and females will be given preference)

  8. Date on which the animals are required

  9. Nearest airport

  10. Distance from the airport to the Institute

  11. Telegraphic code, Fax numbers and Telephone numbers

  12. Residence Telephone number of the officer ordering for the animals. (this will facilitate communicating despatch details)

Although orders can be executed at short notice for small numbers of animals (50-100 mice or rats and 10-15 rabbits or guinea pigs), it is desirable to give advance notice of 30-40 days regarding requirement for animals. This will ensure better planning of the breeding programme and supply of animals according to the specifications and on the date required.

  1. Animals are generally supplied against advance payment either in cash or by demand draft payable to the Director, NCLAS at the branches of the Nationalised Banks in Secunderabad. Outstation cheques will not be accepted.

  2. Animals can be either collected from our Animal Facility or air freighted to the nearest airport. In case of airfreighting, packing, forwarding and handling charges will be extra. Animals will not be sent unaccompanied by rail.

  3. Appropriate kinds of transport boxes for airfreighting animals are available from the facility. Those who come to collect animals from our facility, please ensure to bring appropriate size and adequate number of cages.

  4. Prompt acknowledgement of receipts of animals by air is requested.

  5. As soon as the animals are received please transfer them to clean cages and feed clean water. Transportation is a stress on animals. Therefore it  is advisable to use the animals for experimentation or breeding only after an acclimatization period of  7 to 15 days in the new environment.

  6. We will not be responsible for any death, injury or escape of animals after they leave our premises. Requests for free replacement of animals or refund of cost will not be entertained.

  7. Feed-back on the quality of animals supplied by us in terms of experimental results will be appreciated. It will enable us to monitor the quality of animals.

  8. Indents for animals may please be sent to:
