Scope of Activities:

Situated at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, the Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC) is a 350 bedded state-of-the art super speciality hospital dedicated to providing free of cost quality medical treatment to the victims of the Bhopal Gas tragedy of 1984. The Hospital has the following specialties: Cardiology, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, G.I. Surgery, G.I. Medicine, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Pathology, Microbiology and Blood Transfusion.

BMHRC has eight Mini Units situated in different parts of the city to provide primary health care services to the gas victims. Patients needing specialized care at super-speciality level are referred to the main hospital, the BMHRC.

The Research Centre in addition to undertaking applied and basic research also provides molecular medical diagnostic services.

BMHRC was placed under the ICMR in January 2012.

Thrust Areas:

  • To provide state-of-the-art super speciality medical facilities to all registered gas victims.
  • To carry out basic, clinical and epidemiological research in all disciplines in the hospital
  • To determine long term effects of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) on human tissue and plan treatment modalities based on the findings.
  • To utilize the existing infrastructure to train doctors, nurses and paramedical personnel.
Human Resource Development :

1.1 BMHRC runs the following courses –
Bhopal Nursing College
  • A 2 years Post Basic B.Sc Nursing Degree Course with 50 seats each year.
  • A 3 ˝ years General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) Diploma course with 50 seats each year.

Both courses are recognized by Indian Nursing Council and M.P. State Nursing Council.
Paramedical Institute

  • A 2 years Diploma Courses in Medical Lab Technology, Cath Lab, Dialysis, Optometry Refraction, Perfusion, X-Ray, Anaesthesia, and Microbiology.
  • A 1 year Certificate Course in Blood Transfusion Technician.

1.2Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses in Anaesthesia, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Cardiology, G.I. Surgery and Cardiology.

1.3 BMHRC is recognized for 2 Yrs. Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Cardiology recognized by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

1.4 BMHRC’s Department of Anaesthesia runs a Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine (IDCCM) accredited by ISCCM.

1.5 BMHRC’s Department of Transfusion Medicine has been recognized by the National AIDS Control Organization, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Government of India as a Nodal Training Centre for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

1.6 BMHRC is recognized by Govt. of Madhya Pradesh as a training Institute for Laparoscopic Surgery and Dietetics Internship.

Recognition for Doctorate/Masters by a University:

  • Faculty members of BMHRC are registered guides for Ph.D in G.I. Surgery affiliated to Barkatullah University, Bhopal.
  • Its Research Centre is affiliated with Barkatullah University, Bhopal and M.M.U University, Ambala for Doctoral programme.

Major Achievements:

  • BMHRC was adjudged the second best green hospital among 23 Hospitals in the country by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Western Region in 2011.
  • Department of Microbiology, BMHRC is RNTCP accredited, Intermediate Reference Laboratory for the State of Madhya Pradesh, for tuberculosis culture and sensitivity.
  • The BMHRC’s treatment record since 2000 is given below: -
    • 8 Mini Units:
      Out Patient Department (OPD) visit – 4,853,623 Gas Victims (free of cost);
    • Main Hospital:
      a) OPD visits – 1,293,200 (1,037,546 Gas Victim patients (free of cost), 151,302 Non-gas victim patients (on payment) and 104,352 employees);
      b) In Patient Department (IPD) visits - 98,227 ( 66,149 gas victims (free of cost), 30,839 non-gas victims (on payment) and 1,239 employees)
  • Some of the New Technology developed at BMHRC are as follows: -
    • Valve Repair Technology in Cardiothoracic Surgery
    • Radiofrequency Ablation – first in India
    • Single incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) – first in state
    • Bariatric Surgery – first in Central India
    • Mercedes – benz pyloroplasty – technique of pyloroplasty
    • Electophysiological procedures in Cardiac Arrthymia
