Scope of Activities:

Situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) is the flagship organization for research and training in epidemiology in India. NIE conducts research including interventional studies, disease modeling and health systems, helps to develop/modify statistical methodological issues and conducts epidemiological investigations and clinical trials of traditional remedies. NIE is also involved in significantly contributing to development of human resources for epidemiology in India by conducting Masters Programme in Public Health and Field Epidemiology Training Programme.

Thrust Areas:

The following are the thrust areas of NIE

  • Epidemiology of communicable (e.g., leprosy, HIV) and non-communicable diseases

  • Biostatistics

  • Technical support for controlled clinical trials especially for traditional medicines

  • Health surveys

  • Data processing and analysis for national and international health programmes

  • Human resources development in epidemiology, biostatistics and public health

International Recognition:

  • Recognized as WHO Collaborating Centre for Leprosy Epidemiology and Research.
  • Member of global network of field-based training programmes, namely, Training Programmes in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET).
Human Resource Development :

Conducts two-year master’s level training programmes in field epidemiology and public health for middle level health managers working in state health departments.
Recognition for Doctorate/Masters by a University:

  • Masters’ programmes recognized by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (An institute of national importance under Govt. of India with the status of a university), Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Ph.D. programmes in epidemiology, biostatistics and social sciences recognized by the University of Madras, Chennai.

Major Achievements:

Significant achievements of NIE are the following:

  • Significant contributions to National AIDS Control Programme

    • Identified as Technical Resource Group for Epidemiology of HIV by National AIDS
      Control Organization [NACO].

    • Identified as Regional Institute for South India for the Annual HIV Sentinel Surveillance
      Programme of NACO

  • Conducted large scale field-based vaccine trials to evaluate the efficacy of anti-leprosy

  • Coordinates international multi-centric trial to assess the effectiveness of uniform multidrug
    therapy for all types of leprosy patients.

  • Assessed efficacy of traditional medicines through controlled clinical trials.

  • Trained over 90 ‘in-service’ medical officers from 18 States in field epidemiology/public

    • They form an impressive technical force for the Indian surveillance system to investigate
      rumours and outbreaks.

    • They investigated over 100 outbreaks leading to evidence-based recommendations to
      reduce morbidity and mortality.

  • Set up the ICMR School of Public Health and managing the ICMR partnership for Schools of
    Public Health.

  • Facilitated networking within ICMR for research, teaching and training.
