Scope of Activities:

Situated at New Delhi the National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS) aims to promote and undertake research in statistical techniques and methodology in the field of health research, exercise surveillance to ensure the statistical adequacy and validity in various programmes of the Council and Government of India.

Thrust Areas:

The following are the thrust areas of NIMS

  • Modelling, estimation and projection of HIV/AIDS.
  • Survey methodology and operations research including programme evaluation.
  • Establishment and management of Clinical Trials Registry – India (CTRI).
  • Training programmes on statistical computing in clinical trials, epidemiology and biosocial Research.
  • Technical support in M&E to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s programmes and other departments.
International Recognition:

  • Clinical Trial Registry - India (CTRI) is recognized as a primary register of WHO International Clinical Trial Registry Platform (ICTRP).
  • Member of Science and Technology Group for HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific Region.
Recognition for Doctorate/Masters by a University:

Institute is an approved research centre for Ph.D. programme in Medical Statistics by the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi.

Major Achievements:

Significant achievements of NIMS are the following
  • Establishment of Clinical Trials Registry – India (CTRI), in collaboration with DST and WHO.
  • Nodal institute for NACO’s programme on HIV Sentinel Surveillance, Modelling Estimation and Projection of HIV/AIDS in India.
  • Lead institute for the conduct of integrated behavioural and biological assessment along national highways (IBBA-NH) among truckers for HIV epidemic in the country.
  • National nodal agency for the implementation of IDSP-NCD risk factor survey.
  • National technical support to the evaluation surveys at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India, e.g., District Level Household Survey (DLHS-3), Annual Health Survey (AHS) and NRHM Concurrent Evaluation, etc.
  • Capacity building training programmes on statistical methods and research methodology to heath researchers, programme managers and students of medical colleges and various universities.
