Present activities:

  • Completed projects on Nutritional Status along with micronutrient deficiency disorders and morbidity in pregnant and lactating women in desert areas of Rajasthan and going to start second phase of the project i.e. Development of nutrition package for Micronutrient deficiencies its impact assessment on pregnant & lactating women in desert areas of Rajasthan.
  • Doing Extramural project in collaboration with Defense Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore Assessment of Iodine deficiency disorder, Anemia & Nutrition Intervention in school age children of Jodhpur.
  • Conducting Nutrition Monitoring Surveys on NNMB Pattern in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan
  • Recently completed extramural project in collaboration with Defense Food Research Laboratory, Mysore on Impact assessment of consumption of two electrolyte products on mineral profile (Na, K, Ca in Serum and Na, K, I in urine) and general health and nutrition profile of Adult population in desert areas.
  • Initiation soon a project on Estimation of Zinc deficiency (Serum Zn by AAS) in school children of Rajasthan
  • Recently completed a project entitled, Nutritonal status of school age children in desert areas of Rajasthan in order to assess the nutritional status of school e children through anthropometery, dietary intake and clinical examination of nutritional deficiences signs .
  • Recently I have completed a project entitled Morbidity Profile and Nutrition among workers engaged in Textile Industry in Jodhpur and Pali districts of Rajasthan in order to assess their nutritional status and morbidity through examination for their present and past illnesses, anthropometry, dietary intake, clinical examination of nutritional deficiency signs and Routine Urine investigations for RBC, Albumin, Sugar, and Ketone (multiple strip method) and Haemoglobin estimation by Cynmethaemoglobin technique (Filter paper method)
  • The important studies completed so far, have been conducted on the Nutritional status of pre-school children in desert areas of Rajasthan, to asses the nutritional status of pre-school children by means of anthropometry, dietary and clinical examination; Infant feeding practices and maternal beliefs regarding diet during common childhood illness in desert areas, to find out pattern of infant feeding and weaning practices, beliefs and misconceptions existing in mothers of desert areas regarding childhood illness Establishment of health care delivery system for salt labourers under a systematic master plan by way of a comprehensive health survey of all salt labourers to determine about the preventive programmes for health hazards in salt industry AIDS awareness among pregnant women in Jaipur city to know the extant of awareness and knowledge of AIDS in pregnant women
  • A study of nutrition and health status in different segments of tribal population; Multi Indicator survey of six desert districts of Rajasthan to develop a rapid assessment system which can find out the current status of mid decade goals and to establish the district level database of different mid decade goals for future programmes.
  • I was also involved as co investigator in the project entitled, Epidemiological study of various factors related to urolithiasis in desert and non-desert districts in order to know its magnitude and various risk factors related to urolithiasis .
Training acquired
  • Attended training at S.P. Medical College, Bikaner from November 84 to February, 1985, through lectures, seminars and field visits on different aspects of health and nutritional surveys to be conducted in desert conditions.
  • Attended a re-orientation programme in September, 1986 at Jodhpur , where the experts from NIN, Hyderabad and IRMS, New Delhi, made the trainees acquainted with the standard procedures and techniques for collecting data of dietary and anthropometric surveys. Hospital visits were also made to get acquainted with the nutritional deficiency signs among children. Later on standardization was done in order to remove inter and intra personnel errors.
  • Attended a training on `On line searching of Bibliographic Data-bases, organized by NIC, New Delhi, in February, 1994, at S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur for NICNET and MEDLARS.
  • Attended a months Biostatistics Course for Scientists in September-October, 1995, at DMRC, Jodhpur, on the application of statistical methods during various health and nutritional surveys and their analysis.

  • Invited to deliver lecture on Iodine Deficiency Disorders & its consequences in National Seminar on Recent Advances on analytical Chemistry in Trace elements and Health session held at J.N.V. University, Jodhpur from Nov., 29th to Dec., 1st, 2004
WHO Fellowship:

Awarded WHO Fellowship for undergoing Training in Food Safety at Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand for three weeks from 13th to 31st July, 2009.

Special Assignments:

  • As per the advice of Scietific Advisory Committee, 2001, attempts were made to establish National Nutrition Monitoring Bureao (NNMB) network in Rajasthan. In this connection, visit was made to National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad and had discussion with Director, NIN and Dr. Vijay Raghvan, Officer in charge, NNMB, Hyderabad. Initially, it has been started in Jodhpur district for its continuous monitoring and later on it will be expanded horizontally in Rajasthan.
  • As per the advice of Prof. N. K. Ganguli, Director General, ICMR I have established Micronutrient Laboratory at DMRC in consultation with Dr. Bhan, AIIMS, Delhi, Dr. Shiv Kumar, Officer-in-Charge, NIN, Hyderabad and Dr. Kapil, at AIIMS. At present the facilities for the estimation of Urinary Iodine Excreture level and Iodine in salt have been developed and the estimation of serum retinol and Zinc will start very soon.
  • Project on Assessment of Nutritional status of rural population of Drought affected areas of Jodhpur district of Western Rajasthan was undertaken in 2003- 04.
  • Project on A preliminary survey of Nutritional status of adult population of Raika Community in Jodhpur district, Rajasthan was undertaken in 2003- 04.
  • A preliminary study on camel milk consumption by Raika community in Jodhpur district, Rajasthan in 2004- 05.
  • Sub- clinical vitamin A deficiency among children (6 to 71 months) of Rajasthan funded by UNICEF, India. 2006


Extension Education Work:
  1. Research projects:

    I have been imparting health education pertaining to different aspects of health and nutrition during the conduction of field studies under the following projects-
    • Nutritional status of the School children in desert districts of Rajasthan
    • Micronutrient deficiency disorders along with Nutritional Status and morbidity in pregnant and lactating women in desert areas of Rajasthan
    • Morbidity pattern and Nutrition among the workers engaged in Textile industry of Pali and Jodhpur districts of Rajasthan
    • Assessment of Nutritional status of rural population of Drought affected areas of Jodhpur district of Western Rajasthan
    • Nutrition Monitoring Survey on NNMB pattern in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan
    • Nutritional status of adult population of Raika community in Jodhpur district.


    Training at divisional level:
    • A Training Programme was organized at divisional level from 19th to 23rd January, 2004 on the techniques for collecting data on anthropometric measurements, dietary intakes and nutritional deficiency signs along with standardization of techniques in order to minimize the intra and interpersonal variations, in view to train staff for NNMB pattern project.


    Future Training Programs:
    • Next year the extension education work will be continued under two projects on Development of nutrition packages for Micronutrient deficiencies and its impact assessment on pregnant and lactating women in desert areas of Rajasthan and Fortification projects in children of desert areas of Rajasthan.
    • Techniques for Assessment of Nutritional status of community for two weeks to B.Sc. / M. Sc./ MBBS and for ICDS workers (Proposed to Ministry of Health for initiating at DMRC)
  2. Exhibitions:
    • Organized Poster exhibition regarding the scientific work carried out by DMRC scientists since inception on the occasion of celebration of DMRC Day on 27th June, 2002.
    • Participated in Swasthaya Mela organized by State Health Department at S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur from 11th to 13th Feb., 2004 and highlighted the scientific work of division of Nutrition, DMRC by means of posters and counseling to the public.
    • Regarding exhibitions, I have been associated with 6 exhibitions organized by the centre under National Science Day celebrations, Hindi Diwas and technology day celebrations, in which I displayed posters on health and nutritional problems in desert areas, and organized four quizzes and competitions, related to above topics for school children and staff members of DMRC.
