On the screening schedule, visual handicap topped the list, contributing to 89% (N = 1701). Next in order of frequency were 'pain in the joints' (N = 957, 50%), 'sleeplessness' (N = 764, 40%), 'vague bodily pains' (N = 730, 38%), 'backache' (N = 653, 34%), 'giddiness' (N = 649, 34%), 'numbness' (N = 496, 26%). It was found that on an average, a geriatric subject consulting at the clinic presented with 5 or 6 symptoms.

The system classification of the diagnosis revealed the following break-up: visual 88% (N = 1681), locomotor 40% (N = 764), C.N.S. 18.7% (N = 358), CVS 17.4% (N=333), respiratory 16.1% (N=308), skin 13.3% (N= 254), abdomen/ G.I.T. 9.9% (N = 190), hearing 8.2% (N = 156), urinary 3.5% (N = 66) and miscellaneous 7.5% (N = 147) including cancer (N= 11; cervix-3, cheek-2, breast-1, endometrium-1, penis-1, larynx-1, thyroid-1, bladder-1). Psychiatric illness contributed to 8.1% (N = 160).

The predominant findings in different systems are given below :

Visual (N = 1681, 88%)

Immature cataracts (1378), aphakia (236), matured cataracts (163), corneal opacity (68), dacryocystitis (34), pterygium (38), leucoma (16), blindness (11) and glaucoma (2) were the predominant ones.

Locomotor (N = 764, 40%)

Degenerative joint disease (DJD) was diagnosed in 615 subjects and myalgia in 55; and Cervical spondylosis and lumbago in 15 and 11 respectively. Fractures (Malunited, 'Colles', tibia, rib, calcaneal etc.) accounted for 25.Neurological (N = 358, 18'7%)

Peripheral neuritis (288), hemiplegia (15), senile tremors (13), titubation (12), Parkinsonism (6), facial palsy (5), epilepsy (2) were the predominant diagnoses.

Cardiovascular (N = 333,17.4%)

Ninety-two subjects were diagnosed as hypertensives. 214 subjects were anaemic. Eight subjects had myocardial infarction with 6 others complaining of angina. There were 9 subjects with congestive cardiac failure. Four had aortic stenosis and 2 aortic incompetence. Irregular beats (Extrasystole) were made out in 4 subjects. Twenty-one subjects had postural hypotension.

Respiratory (N = 308, 16.1%)

Acute bronchitis (100), Upper Respiratory Infection (82), Pulmonary tuberculosis (57), Bronchial asthma (40), Chronic Bronchitis (30) were the common conditions. Five subjects had Bronchiectasis.

Dermatology (N = 254, 13.3%)

Pruritus (51), Hansen's Disease (39), Eczema (28), Scabies (24), Fungal infection (20), Utricaria (17), Vitiligo (10) and Keloid (5) were the common skin conditions.
